Phoenix FM Radio History
Last updated on December 8, 2001

FM radio in Phoenix began in 1950 when KTYL-FM 104.7 came on the air from Mesa. KTYL-FM was the sister station of KTYL AM 1310, both run by the Harkins Theater group. This company would also start KTYL-TV Channel 12 in 1953, so they were pioneers on all bands. KTYL-FM is still on the air, and is now KZZP.

The first non-commercial educational (NCE) station went on the air in 1951 as Phoenix College's KFCA, originally on 88.1 and now on 91.5 as KJZZ. Its facilities moved to Mesa Community College in the early 1970s and is now KJZZ.
